<div>The Academy of Classical Ballet – CALIFORNIA is proud to present:

&quot;Thumbelina&quot; - a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a thumb-sized girl and the many adventures that she encounters before finding her way back home to the flowers from where she was born.

A tiny girl named Thumbelina emerges from a beautiful bouquet of flowers amongst the butterflies. The generous and caring Woodland fairy makes it her responsibility to watch over the vulnerable Thumbelina. One evening, while dancing in the glade with her winged friends, she is carried off by a chorus of frogs who want the miniature maiden as their playmate. The mischievous frogs tease poor Thumbelina and leave her on a lily pad in the middle of the stream – keeping her captive. With the help of friendly fish, Thumbelina escapes and drifts along until coming across a cluster of ladybugs. As the seasons change, Thumbelina finds that she is far from home and does her best to protect herself from the elements, but when winter comes, she is in desperate straits. The vulnerable and lost Thumbelina is given shelter by an old mole who takes advantage of her situation - wanting her as his wife. She finds this prospect deeply upsetting, worsened by being far from home and in an awful situation. Thumbelina somehow finds the will to escape, fleeing to a far off land with an indebted swallow, whom she selflessly nursed back to health during the harsh winter. In a sunny field of flowers, Thumbelina is reunited with the butterflies and receives a pair of wings from the gracious Woodland Fairy to accompany her on their travels from flower to flower, happy and finally free.

<div>Join Stella Nova Dance Company as they present Prajna Within, a journey through the complex human psyche and its relation to mother earth, premiering on April 23rd and 24th at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

Prajna Within takes the audience on a trip through the complexity of the human mind in relation to our emotions. Thoughts and emotions are incredibly interconnected, but our world tends to favor the mind and neglect emotional well-being. This journey hopes to touch the audience on many levels of the human condition. When individuals activate the path of self-awareness, amazing opportunities open up for relationships, for our own health, and for the health of our planet.

The Tenth Dancer

Saturday, March 13, 2009, 7 PM
Khmer Arts Academy Studio
1364 Obispo Avenue
Long Beach, CA 90804
Free and Open to the Public

From 1975 – 1979, Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge followers decimated Cambodia’s cultural, economic, and social infrastructures. Those with ties to education, elite society, and religion were targeted for execution in order to birth a new peasant society based on rice production. Cambodia’s classical dancers, whose very livelihoods were linked to the royal court, hid their identities in the many labor camps across the country in order to survive. However, it is estimated that only one of ten dancers managed to escape Pol Pot’s living nightmare.

Join Prumsodun Ok and the Khmer Arts Academy community for Sally Ingleton’s “The Tenth Dancer”, an intimate portrait of the relationship between a teacher and her student as they work to revive the art of Cambodian classical dance. Set in war-torn Cambodia, it follows Em Theay, then director of the National Dance Company of Cambodia, and her student Pen Sok Chea through their memories and homes, rehearsals and performances to make visible the devastating realities of war – offering a glimpse of the rebirth of Cambodia’s arts and the revival of the spirits of its land and people. The film is fifty-five minutes long, in Khmer and English with English subtitles.

 <div>- A joint M.F.A. Thesis Concert: Dance Photography and Site-Specific Performance -

This project is a culmination of two years of graduate study. The choreographic and theoretical research of Claire M. Calalo explores democratic dance-making, improvisation for performance, and the relationship between the arts and social justice.

Lisa M. Bates (a.k.a. Presley) will be presenting her research in a gallery of dance photography resulting from close collaboration with various UCI graduate student choreographers in the modern, jazz, and ballet genres.

The concert will be held on April 3 at 7pm, in the beautiful four-story atrium of the Calit2 Building on the UC Irvine Campus, and is free of charge.

Reception to follow with complimentary refreshments.</div>

“HyperReal,” blending text, song, sound, movement and live video to examine the complex and conflicted ways we inhabit our minds, our bodies and our world in the digital age. How do we determine what is “real” in a world where our experiences and perceptions are mediated through technology – a world where even our “actual” physical experience can be questioned? With a knack for illuminating large themes through very personal and intimate lenses, Kraft transports audiences with hilarious, heartbreaking, disturbing, provocative and transcendent meditations on the human condition that linger long after leaving the theater.

 <div>Berkeley Dance Project-
This season’s Berkeley Dance Project addresses the theme of American stories, memories, and constructions. The diverse choreographers on the program will present work that ranges from historical modern dance of the 1930&#39;s to hybrid/contemporary choreography that questions where dance comes from and what has been borrowed, cited, or stolen to make it. Choreographer Lisa Wymore will re-create a dance based on direct citation of early U.S. post-modern dance makers and visual artists; Peggy Hackney will re-stage the quintessential Doris Humprhey work “The Shakers”; Katie Faulkner of little seismic dance company, will be making a new work utilizing dances on film; and Jacinta Vlach of Liberation Dance Theater will premiere a new work citing dances of South America, the African Diaspora, and beyond.
