Maria Bauman’s classes focus on broadening the dancers’ physical resources while remaining true to their current range and strengths–contemporary dance emphasizing powerful, spatial fluidity and floorwork. We learn how to fly into the floor safely and using our hands like feet. You can watch video and learn more about that work at www.mbdance.org.
Maria Bauman founded MBDance in Brooklyn, NY in 2007, creating duets & small group dances from a sense of physical & emotional power, a desire for equity, and a fascination with intimacy & relationship. For that work, she has been honored by GO! Magazine as a “Woman at the Helm.” Described in The New York Times as “texturally rich in its gestural language, and beautifully performed…,” Bauman’s choreography employs both linear and circular narrative, and is also influenced by Bauman’s extensive study of capoeira, an African Brazilian vernacular movement form.MBDance has received Harlem Stage Fund for New Work awards through the Jerome Foundation and a Dance Theater Workshop Studio Series among other residencies and honors. Bauman is on faculty for American Dance Festival (ADF) & Urban Bush Women SLI.
