Dancer/choreographer Vangeline continues to carry the art of Butoh into the 21st Century with the San Francisco premiere of “FIFTH OF BUTOH”, a new Butoh fantasy about the 5th: FIFTH Dimension, FIFTH Amendment, and FIFTH of Beethoven. In “Fifth of Beethoven”, New York butoh star Vangeline conjures ghosts of two passionate giants – founder of butoh Tatsumi Hijikata and composer Ludwig van Beethoven – in this hypnotic, electrifying and award-winning solo performance.
Music choices for “5th” are also especially adventurous and forward thinking, and include Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the Wind,” included because it was written in 1963, the same year that it became law to read the fifth amendment rights – the right to remain silent – to the accused.
From Vangeline Dance Theater in New York, Butoh artists Azumi Oe and Vangeline. Joining the Company for this special season is guest San Francisco-based Butoh artist, Shoshana Green.
Vangeline’s performance draws from Ankoku Butoh (Dance of Darkness) and follows the tradition of Japanese Noh Theatre, where performers first appear as human, then as ghosts. Her work combines the post-apocalyptic vision of Butoh with the aesthetics of 21st century film noir. The style is unique and has been described as Butoh meets film noir.
