East West is a multidisciplinary performance project that explores the issue of gang violence. This work sheds light on the problem of gang activity, shares the stories of those with first hand experience, and offers solutions for ways to escape the deadly grip of gang culture. East West brings together diverse collaborators in an effort to educate and inspire, including Rancho Cielo Youth Campus, dancers Jones Welch, Annie Talmadge, Philip Wainwright, and Colton PiersonGeiger, literary rap artist Baba Brinkman, and many others.
East West strives to give voice to an often marginalized population, bringing their experiences and concerns to the stage with integrity, force, and meaning. East West puts the arts at the center of a conversation about this complex issue of gang violence and it’s relationship to systemic poverty. Participants will experience how these difficult topics can be expressed and explored through art and will find the inspiration and motivation to change their lives and even influence a larger community change.
