Join longtime instructor Monica Berini for a Fundamentals of Middle Eastern Dance 6-week class series. This popular series runs two to three times per year, exploring the roots of the multi-faceted and diverse forms that sometimes fall under the umbrella of “belly dance”.
Designed for those new to Egyptian style or solo old school belly dance and those returning after a break, this class will provide a basic understanding of Egyptian raqs (dance) movement, posture, technique, and music fundamental to many styles.
Prerequisite: No experience needed through up to two years, and I always welcome more experienced learners looking to brush up on their basics or try a new-to-them style or instructor.
All of Monica’s classes at all levels have a musical approach to movement. Along with focused technique and movement practice and combinations, each class includes a focused warm-up, shimmy drills, conceptual and informational dance context as appropriate, a dance-along or a dance circle, and a cool down. Monica has taught weekly classes at Lines since 2003 following her professional dance career, and she received the bulk of her own training in San Francisco, New York, and Cairo.
Each class will both introduce new information and review movements and concepts presented in the previous class. Though taking the whole series is recommended, drop ins are welcome if there is room.
Please see my website for additional ongoing intermediate and advanced classes. See you in the studio!
