ABOUT BARBARA: ESSENCE OF MY WORK

Movement is part of our everyday lives, and can be shaped and formed to realize a specific goal. It can be virtuous, and/or pedestrian. The two can be part of the same canvas, the same dance. Movement is the underlying and strongest component with which I create: designs, scenes, stories, and environments. My goal is to bring to the surface underlying emotional tones that are kinesthetically experienced by the viewer, designing tapestries that are rich, spare stark, simple, intimate. My structures are rigorous. I am interested in beauty and mystery, and story – telling, as I work to distill the meaning of a dance to its purest essence. My current trajectory includes but is not limited to rigorous improvisational and collaborative process in both in rehearsals and performance. I reference the body, my body, using pure movement and the process of its invention and investigation to create my dances.

My interest, my passion, is the body – the limitless possibilities of the body as an expressive instrument, to carry a story, express a viewpoint, depict a character, create an environment. I have pursued the form of the solo dance for many years. I think of solo dances as being in dialogue

TURF

ARTISTS FROM SANTA BARBARA – LOS ANGELES – NEW YORK

3 great cities known for their dynamic art communities
Expect to be moved, shifted, inspired, humored and uplifted!

“An artist as one blade of grass, all alone, coping with the survival elements? Or, as a community, with interwoven root systems, the potential to generate a powerful sense of turf. Turf because dancers are a fierce breed: courage, heart, poetry, rich soil. As a dance maker twenty + years into the journey, I liken them to wild mustangs. So, given it is my turn to lead in terms of community production, I wanted to use a metaphor that serves wild ponies well. Turf tended with principles of conscious leadership; bee-ing the change we wish for the world!”
Turf tender MD Kelly Dances for the community, project of artbark.org.

Reeling

Reeling is an hour-long dance theatre work set in a bar. Eight lonely hearts search for connection through the hazy sea of a night out. Where the dive bar acts as a literal platform for dancers to hurl themselves off. Reeling examines blurred boundaries between fun and violence, spectator and performer, longing and sensuality.

What: Bridges of Exchange: Being the Change

ArtBark, after a triumphant premiere of Alma.Sama at the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, grounds back into its local expression. Continuing with its local tradition of nurturing artistic excellence via creating golden bridges of lush performing and teaching opportunity to artists living in other regions of the world, they continue to invigorate the local arts scene with a studio showing of inter-active creative play, storytelling, improvisation, and contemporary dance. ArtBark Local will share elements created this summer and invites the audience to participate in creative play experiencing the joys of the co-creative process. Additionally, Hannah Ruth Brothers and Misa Kelly will share an excerpt from choreographic research they began this spring, and ArtBark choreographer Stephen Kelly will share a developing solo set on local dancer Nikki Pfieffer. Keeping the energy of exchange alive, the critically acclaimed Sierra Madre based company Nancy Evans Dance Theater returns to share 30 minutes of their world class contemporary dance featuring the choreography of Nancy Evans Doede, Jenn Logan, and European based artist Nikolaos Crist Doede.
