Discover Dance: Lake View Terrace

DISCOVER DANCE WITH BENITA BIKE’S DANCEART: LAKE VIEW TERRACE LIBRARY

Ever wondered how dancers create dances? On Saturday, December 3, 2pm, you can find out when Benita Bike’s DanceArt presents an interactive dance outreach program at Lake View Terrace Library, 12002 Osborne Street, Lake View Terrace. Make an afternoon of it and visit the Los Angeles Discovery Cube right next door! This FREE dance performance is suitable for adults, children, and seniors and is supported, in part, by a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles.
Libraries are great places to share dance and Benita Bike’s DanceArt has a long history of reaching out through dance. Now in its 36th season, this Los Angeles modern dance company knows how to introduce the soul of dance to audiences! The Company’s work stands at the crossroads of past and present, blending the music and sensibilities of the past with evocative contemporary movement.
This Lake View Terrace performance features two dances: On “Beat 3″ and “Old Postcards from Europe.” Dance reviewer Jeff Slayton of SeeDance.com describes “On Beat 3″ as “a rapid fire movement piece driven by the music Tin Play by Swedish composer Per Andreessen.” “Old Postcards from Europe” takes its inspiration from 3 late 19th/early 20th century postcards from the cities of Munich, Vienna, and Budapest. Church bells, Wallingford Riegger’s dramatic music, and the sounds of Klezmer accompany the dance.

TURF

ARTISTS FROM SANTA BARBARA – LOS ANGELES – NEW YORK

3 great cities known for their dynamic art communities
Expect to be moved, shifted, inspired, humored and uplifted!

“An artist as one blade of grass, all alone, coping with the survival elements? Or, as a community, with interwoven root systems, the potential to generate a powerful sense of turf. Turf because dancers are a fierce breed: courage, heart, poetry, rich soil. As a dance maker twenty + years into the journey, I liken them to wild mustangs. So, given it is my turn to lead in terms of community production, I wanted to use a metaphor that serves wild ponies well. Turf tended with principles of conscious leadership; bee-ing the change we wish for the world!”
Turf tender MD Kelly Dances for the community, project of artbark.org.

Los Angeles Artist: Nancy Evans Doede
Santa Barbara Artists: Mindy Nelson, E. Bonnie Lewis, Ken Gilbert, Misa Kelly, Stephen Kelly

Decolonizing the Body through Dance

ABOUT EVENT:
“Decolonizing the Body Through Dance” is a movement research spearheaded by Brazilian-born dancer & choreographer, Marina Magalhães, based on the belief that decolonization is a futuristic process of reclaiming and reinventing tradition. It is based on five fundamental principles of African Diasporic dance practices: intimate relationship with the ground, mobile spine, playful improvisation, dynamic (off) balance, and circularity in individual movement and collective participation. Magalhães establishes these principles as core aesthetic values, while valuing each individual dancer’s unique expression and innate ability to embody the principles in creative and generative ways. This iteration of the workshop will consistent of: warm-up (utilizing the Brain Dance methodology by Anne Green Gilbert), across the floor (improvisation & building shared vocabulary), and learning choreography. Some dance experience encouraged, all dance backgrounds welcome.

ABOUT MARINA:
Marina Osthoff Magalhães is a seasoned dancer, teacher, and award-winning choreographer from Brazil, based in Los Angeles. Recipient of the 2013 LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Choreography, Magalhães’s critically acclaimed dance work has been hailed as “powerful” by Spot LA, “unrivaled” by Theatre Ghost, and “incredible” by LA Dance Review.
